Umpire Information

Port Perry Minor Softball Association Requirements

Plate umpires are used in all divisions with the exception of Learn To Play.  Depending on the number of Jr. Umpires available, a two-person system will be used for Mite and above in regular season.  Two umpires will be scheduled for all championship games.

Eligibility to Umpire for Port Perry Minor Softball

To be eligible to umpire, applicants must be 13 years old (12 year olds turning 13 in the season may apply and will be assessed based on maturity and previous softball experience) and he/she must

  • Attend a Junior, or Intermediate, or Level One Development Clinic offered by Softball Ontario ( for those under 16) 


  • Earn carded status from Softball Ontario by writing a take home exam


Returning umpires may be required to attend a Level One umpire clinic after their first two years

  • Exceptions may be made at the discretion of the Chief Umpire and/or Umpire Mentor for candidates who have umpired for Port Perry in the past and have demonstrated satisfactory understanding of the game and the rules.
  • Umpires are encouraged to register with Softball Ontario

Umpires must submit an application to Port Perry & District Minor Softball each season.

Umpires who attend an Umpire Clinic and demonstrate dedication and responsibility to their job throughout the season will receive a year-end bonus.  They may be reimbursed up to $40 upon recommendation from the Chief Umpire based on filling all scheduled obligations to Port Perry Minor Softball.

Port Perry Minor Softball loans our Umpires the following equipment:

  • Face mask
  • Chest protector
  • Leg guards

Equipment must be returned at the end of the season.  
Umpires are expected to wear an HR powder or navy blue shirt (Jr. Development or Full Collar), HR ball cap or House League cap, navy/dark suitable pants-no jeans and black shoes. It is expected that umpires provide their own counters and whisks.

Umpires are paid based on their certification level and experience.  The number of games scheduled depends on your availability and the number of umpires available.
